It is present day and all mutants are under attack by Sentinels, unstoppable robots that can morph and adapt to the mutants various strengths and if unchecked, will wipe out all mutants. It is decided that Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) will go back in time (since his body can heal itself, apparently he can withstand the time travel) and stop Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence, as the young Mystique) from killing Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage), the inventor of the Sentinels and keep the war on mutants from ever starting. It seems that the first time around, she killed Trask but was captured and her DNA was harvested for the Sentinel program. Wolverine heads back to stop this. Of course, this means that he must find Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and a young Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and get them to work together to help him stop Mystique. Of course, at this point in history, Xavier and Magneto are enemies and it takes major convincing to try to get their help. Meanwhile, in the future, the mutants, including Prof. Xavier (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page), Storm (Halle Berry) and others are under a Sentinal attack. In the past, even though they are able to thwart the assassination of Trask, Xavier and Magneto are at a tipping point and it appears that the future could be even more bleak than ever.
I loved this movie. The concept was such a great idea. The movie feels fresh and invigorating. It is fun to see the characters as their younger selves in the same movie as their older selves. And the ending is pretty interesting, too. There is wit and charm to spare. I can't wait to see the next one although, I may have to see this one again because I'm sure there are things I missed the first time around. Stay for the credits for a snippet from a future release (of course, the snippet is at the absolute END of the credits!).
