Wild is based on the Best-Selling memoir by Cheryl Strayed. Reese Witherspoon plays her in the movie which documents her 1,100 mile journey hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in an effort to recover from her Mother's death and other issues in her life. Cheryl had just about reached bottom in her grief over her Mother's death, she was shooting heroin, sleeping with anonymous men and betraying her current husband. This journey was just what she needed to reconnect with herself and get back on the right path.

Reese Witherspoon is fantastic in this role. It is very different from the typical rom-com roles that we usually see her doing. She is make-up free, she curses, does drugs and even is a little more frisky in the bedroom than usual. She really immerses herself in this role and I'm sure she will be nominated for plenty of awards at the end of the year. This is a great movie. It was much more captivating than I expected. It is funny, engrossing and beautifully filmed. Cheryl runs into lots of different characters along the trail. Some are scary, some are funny and some are hard to read. What drove her to ultimately take this hike is disclosed in flashbacks. The flashbacks are mostly seemless and provide clarity. My only complaint is that not enough time was spent understanding her relationship with her first husband. But, that is a small gripe. Overall, this was a great movie with great performances. Go see it!
