Inspired by her father, Robyn Davidson (Mia Wasikowska) always felt a longing to hike 1700 miles across the deserts of West Australia by herself. When she was in her twenties, she decided to finally take the trip. She had no money, so she worked for camel trainers in order to understand how to use camels to carry her gear. She was paid in cash and camels. She still needed more funding, so she worked out a deal with National Geographic Magazine. They agreed to fund her trip if they could send along a photographer to document her journey. She reluctantly agreed. The photographer, Rick Smolan (Adam Driver) annoyed her but they still had a short-lived affair before becoming just friends. On certain parts of her journey she was forced to have a male guide accompany her over sacred lands. Mr Eddie was a great travel companion who helped her understand the wilderness and told funny stories. But, the four camels and her faithful dog, Diggity, kept her going. She loved her animals, even when the camels were acting up, but she had a special place in her heart for Diggity. She loved that dog more than any human. And, they proved to be loyal companions on her ardulous journey.
I loved this movie. I really didn't expect it to be so enthralling. Robyn (Mia) is dirty and sunburned and exhausted for most of the trek but you can tell that she is doing exactly what she set out to do. She meets some very interesting people along the way and you get a glimpse into a whole different culture. For animal lovers like me, the camels and the dog are just amazing. SPOILER ALERT!!! One animal doesn't make it and I am still traumatized. The scenery is just incredible and most of the time there is nothing but stars for miles and miles. When she finally reaches the ocean, it is amazing! The camels go swimming. Stay through the credits to see the actual National Geographic photos. Go see this movie.
