This is the true story of the Father/Son team who are credited with creating the modern game of golf. Tom Morris (Peter Mullan) was the groundskeeper, ball maker, club cleaner and caddy at St. Andrews and Prestwick golf courses. He knew everything about the game of golf and played as often as he could. His son Tommy Morris (Jack Lowden) grew up around golf and was even better than his Father. However, Tommy was determined to be a professional golfer and not work for the rich club members. He went on to become the youngest player to ever win an open championship, at age 17. Unfortunately, he died tragically at a very young age. His Father outlived his entire family, went on to design over 70 golf courses and is still the oldest golfer to win an open championship, at age 46.

This is a pretty good movie. Even if you aren't a huge fan of golf, the movie is still fascinating and gorgeously shot. I even learned a few things. They played golf in the snow back in the 1860's. And, when you didn't like your putt, then you just tried to block the other person from making theirs! Ha! Different from today's game. This film is entertaining and even romantic. It is also very tragic. Poor Tommy was unlucky in love and life. But, he loved golf and was considered the best golfer in Scotland. He and his Father truly put their mark on the way golf is played today, constantly upgrading the courses and the equipment. Nice movie. Fine for most ages, although there is a pretty traumatic birthing scene. If you like golf or just like sports movies, then this might be for you. Be prepared for some strong Scottish accents. I missed more than a few lines because I just couldn't understand them. Still, go see it.
