Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) is a ferociously tough and independent young woman who refuses to face the fact that her Father Lord Richard Croft (Dominic West) is most likely dead. It has been seven years since he was last heard from and everyone is anxious for Lara to finally sign the papers to take over her father's enterprises and gain her inheritance. But, Lara prefers to eke by as a bike messenger and hold out hope that her father will return. When she gets a clue about his last mission, she sets off for a mysterious island off the coast of Japan to try to find the remains of Himiko, an ancient mummy who if resurrected has the power to destroy the world. She enlists Lu Ren (Daniel Wu) to ferry her to this island, in the middle of the most dangerous waters around. It appears that his father also disappeared seven years ago with Richard. What they find on the island is even worse than they expected. Will Lara ever be reunited with her father or has he been dead all these years? Will they be able to prevent the evil Trinity corporation from unleashing Himiko's power out into the world? The stakes couldn't be higher.

This isn't a bad movie. It is action-packed and full of intrigue. it also sets up nicely for a sequel. I thought Alicia Vikander was pretty good. She is strong and ferocious. Obviously, she is attractive but they play more off her physical strengths than her beauty, which I appreciate. (In the previous installments starring Angelina Jolie it was all about the shower scenes and the tight leather outfits. None of that is apparent in this film.) The plot is intriguing and makes sense. Not a bad adaptation of the video game. There is violence, but it is really fine for most age groups. If you like a nice action-packed film, similar to an Indian Jones type film (but not quite that good) then this might be for you. Go see it.
