Kidane and his wife and daughter, Satima and Toya live in the dunes outside of Timbuktu and quietly raise a few head of cattle. Nearby, there is severe unrest in the heart of the city as fundamentalist jihadists have taken over and forbidden music, laughter and soccer. And, they have demanded that women wear socks and gloves. This does not go over well with all of the townspeople and some rebel. However, the punishments are horrendous. Kidane and his family think that they are safe from the turbulence of the city. But, soon their peaceful lives are upended.

This is a tragic movie. I have read that it is based on true events in Mali. It hits very close to home with all of the ISIS turmoil happening in the Middle East today. The movie provides an up close look at how jihadists can take over a whole town and impose ridiculous rules and regulations on everyone with terrible consequences for those that try to oppose them. A very relevant and timely film. Worth seeing!
