Nominated for a Best Animated Film Oscar, this is Hayao Miyazaki's animated story of Jiro Horikoshi, an aviation engineer who designed Japan's A6M fighter plane.  The film follows much of his life, from that as a small boy who dreamed of airplanes, through the great earthquake of 1923, Japan's great depression and Japan's descent into war.  Fresh out of university, Jiro is hired at a Japanese engineering company and is able to work on designs of the planes he loves.  He forges a friendship with Hongo and together they travel to study the airplanes of other architects.  Eventually, he meets and falls in love with a sickly woman and their love is doomed by tuberculosis.  This is an epic tale of romance and friendship, of perseverance and the history of Japan's aviation industry.

This is a beautifully rendered film.  The scenery is lush and colorful.  It is especially fantastic from the view of a soaring airplane.  It is a little deep for kids.  It does involve the design of war planes. However, if you are a Miyazaki fan, this is a fabulous film.
