Runs 110 minutes

Nick (Tom Cruise) and Chris (Jake Johnson) are soldiers serving in Iraq. However, they are more about scavenging for historic artifacts to sell on the black market than actually winning the war. When a bomb blast opens up an underground chamber, they think windfall. Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis) has other ideas. She is in the Middle East trying to protect ancient artifacts from being looted or destroyed by the war effort. She immediately clashes with Nick (which must mean future romance - right?). She enlists Nick and Chris to help her remove an ancient sarcophagus. Little did anyone know that this would awaken Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella), evil personified. Now, she must be stopped before she detroys humanity as we know it.

This movie starts out with a bang - plenty of humor and action. My hopes were raised. Then they were dashed. The movie gets bogged down in the middle. It is very average. It starts to take itself too seriously. This is a movie about monsters, it should have a lighter touch. Everyone is fine but no one can make up for the muddled mess in the middle of this film. Universal Studios had hoped that this would reboot their monster franchise and lead to future movies involving Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein and other monsters. Ths film is definitely open ended but I'm not sure that this film is going to be a summer blockbuster. I guess we'll see. If you go, do see it on a big screen because there is a lot going on. Skip the 3D for sure. Not worth the additional cost. Not my favorite. If someone begs you to go, hit the matinee.
