Based on the true story of seven men (museum directors, curators and art historians) tasked by President Roosevelt to track down precious pieces of art stolen by the Nazis during World War II and return it to its rightful owners. The "Monument Men" head to Germany as the war is still winding down. They discover that the artwork is hidden behind enemy lines and as the Reich is falling, the Germans are ordered by Hitler to destroy the masterpieces as they retreat. The men are in a race against time, trying to save as many pieces of art as possible before it is lost to the world forever. They risk their lives to preserve some of mankinds greatest creations.
This is the true story of some very brave and courageous men. It is amazing to think how many of the great masterpieces could have been lost forever without their valiant work to find and save this artwork. Originally scheduled for release in 2013, it was held back and reworked for the February release. There are a few problems with the overall arc of the movie but it is such a compelling story that it is hard not to leave the theater in awe of these men. Worth the time.
