Runs 113 minutes
A group of boys have been elevatored up into the center of a maze. They are of various ages, mostly teenagers and some of them have been there for 3 years. They have established their own society with jobs, rules and punishments. At night, when the maze opens up, "Runners" take off through the maze, mapping the various sections, which change regularly, and searching for an exit. They have to avoid the "grievers" who guard the maze and will infect anyone stung with a deadly virus. Every month a new boy arrives with some additional supplies. He can't remember anything. Gradually, he remembers his name and that's it. When Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) arrives, he urges the other boys to help him figure out why they are there and how they can get out. Some have been there so long they don't really want to leave. Thomas is anxious to escape and jumps into the maze breaking the rules. He is punished but then made a runner. Then things really take a turn when a girl-Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) is brought up holding a note saying "this is the last one EVER" and she knows Thomas's name. The boys are immediately suspicious and choose sides. A group enters the maze. Will they find out the answers to their questions? Will they find a way out before they are killed by the grievers????
This movie is based on the best-selling novel. I didn't read the book. If you read the book, then I think you will like the movie. The boys are all cute and likeable and the maze is pretty awesome. The grievers look like giant robot scorpions. Kinda weird. I was left wanting more...like why exactly were these boys in the maze? Obviously, they were part of some experiment but who put them there. A company called WCKD and some shady scientists are shown but nothing is resolved and the the movie is left hanging for the sequel. The maze left me a little in a daze. I guess I might have to check out the book...
