Runs 132 minutes

Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) has just returned from the War. He is mentally and physically exhausted. He accepts the post of Lighthouse keeper on a remote island off the coast of Western Australia hoping for some time to reflect and heal. On one of his supply runs, he meets Isabel Graysmark (Alicia Vikander), a beautiful young woman grieving the loss of both of her brothers in the War. They begin a correspondence and eventually marry. She moves to the island and they hope to start a family right away. After two miscarriages, Isabel is distraught. When a rowboat carrying a young baby washes up on the shore, Isable convinces Tom that they should raise the baby as their own. They form a happy family, raising their daughter in a loving and nurturing environment. But, their happiness is shattered when they learn the identity of the baby's mother (Rachel Weisz). Can they go on living with the guilt or must they admit what they have done?

This is a gorgeous and heart-breaking love story. Two lost people find each other and all they want is to have a family. Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander are both great (they date in real life and you can feel their chemistry). You can sympathize with them even while you know that the truth will probably catch up to them. I thought this might be a little slow but it was just enthralling. You get swept right up into their lives but still feel that little pang of dread in the pit of your stomach. This is a beautiful story. It is a story of love and happiness and sadness. In the end, this is a heart-wrenching and enduring love story. Take kleenex and go see it.
