Ella (Helen Mirren) and John Spencer (Donald Sutherland) decide to take one last road trip in their old RV - The Leisure Seeker. Against everyone's advice and with their kids begging them to turn around and come home, the pair set off to Key West to see Hemingway's old home. But, you see John is suffering froom dementia. He has good days and bad days. And, then there is Ella who is not so well herself. Rather than sit around and follow Doctor's orders, they decide to have one last hurrah and go out with a bang. They head out for the adventure of a lifetime and recapture some of their passion for life and love along the way.
This movie is being billed as more of a comedy, but I found it pretty sad. It is sweet and touching and there are some funny parts, but it is still sad. Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland are both great in their roles. There just isn't much to work with. This is a slight film. It touches on some deep topics - dementia, cancer and leaving one's spouse behind after death, among others. These are all handled lightly. Until the end. Then it is just sad. If you are a huge fan of these two actors, then you might want to catch a matinee just to see them. Otherwise, I would probably skip it and see something more uplifting.
