Runs 115 minutes (Subtitled)

This is a movie based on the journal of a French Red Cross doctor (Lou de Laâge) in Poland during WWII. She was summoned by a Nun to her convent for an emergency. It turns out that this convent had been invaded by a group of Russian soldiers near the end of the war and all of the Nuns had been raped. Now, many of the Nuns are pregnant and about to give birth. To the Nuns, this was a horrible secret that must be kept from the outisde world for fear that they would be shunned and the convent would be closed. They were very conflicted because they felt that they had violated their vows of celibacy (even though none of this was their fault). In 1945, these Nuns were not allowed to be touched or ever show their bodies to another person. It was difficult for them to even let a doctor examine them. The Mother Superior (Agata Kulesza) was not in favor of even bringing in a Doctor for fear that they would be exposed. She felt that this was "Providence" and the hand that God had dealt to them. The younger Nuns were not quite in agreement with her on this. In the end, a compromise was reached. But not before every Nun's faith had been tested to the core.

This is my first 5 star movie of 2016. It is a gripping drama based on true events. The three lead actresses are just superb. This sacred society of Nuns was brutally violated and it is heartbreaking watching them attempt to deal with it and maintain their faith. This is a dark movie but there is redemption and light at the end of the tunnel. Well worth seeing. Now, I need to look this up and see how much is actually factual. I was engrossed from start to finish!! Go see it!
