Runs 120 minutes
An Indian family in Mumbai runs a family restaurant. Papa (Om Puri) is in charge, but Mama does the cooking. She has been training their son Hassan (Manish Dayal) to take over the kitchen one day. A terrible accident leaves them homeless and they decide to take the family on the road and open a restaurant in Europe. After a brief stop over in England (no good produce and too much rain) they are back on the road when their car breaks down in France. Papa decides that this is where they are meant to settle and he immediately buys a family restaurant on the outskirts of town. The only problem is that it is directly across the street from a Michelin starred French restaurant run by the town widow Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). She is put off by their strange music and unusual food. A feud of sorts starts up between the two restaurants. Then Hassan goes to work in Madame Mallory's kitchen and is quickly smitten with the Sous Chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon). However, Hassan is soon offered a chance to study in Paris and jumps at the opportunity. Meanwhile, Madame Mallory starts to warm up to the her fellow widow across the street. Will Hassan return from Paris? Will Madame Mallory and Papa Kadam be able to bridge the 100 foot distance between them?
This is a cute and humorous film about romance, food and clashing cultures. I really lked it. The scenery is spectacular and the food looks deicious. Don't go see this on an empty stomach! My only quibble is that it runs a little over two hours and it does start to feel a little long before it wraps up. But it is so sweet and fun that it still makes a lovely diversion on a hot summer day. Go see it.
