Scott (Will Ferrell) and Kate Johansen (Amy Poehler) are about to send their daughter Alex (Ryan Simpkins) off to Bucknell University. She was supposed to win the town scholarship but the evil City Councilman Bob (Nick Kroll) thought they needed a new pool for the town instead. Now Scott and Kate don't have the money to send their daughter to college but are afraid to tell her. Their best friend Frank (Jason Mantzoukas) is a serious gambler whose wife has just left him. He comes up with a crazy plan to open a casino in his house and wants the Johansens to go in with him. He can earn the money to pay off his mortgage and win his wife back and the Johansens can pay for Alex's college. What could go wrong?
This movie was just not funny to me. It felt like Amy Poehler was forcing everything. It was hard to watch her. Will Ferrell was fine and Jason Mantzoukas was pretty funny but the movie was so weak. If you have a daughter who is a good student then I would think that you could apply for other scholarships or financial aid. Maybe even take out a second mortgage on that fancy house. Not start a casino. And, when the police sort of catch on and do a drive by, how do they not hear the DJ, loud music and crazy pool party going on in the backyard?? Finally, how in the world does everyone in the whole town spend every night at the casino? There are like a hundred people there every night but only about 10 cars in the secret parking lot. Nothing really made sense. Sometimes these dumb movies are still really funny. Not this one. It almost made Rough Night look like an Oscar movie. Please skip this one and save a few brain cells. See The Big Sick or even Baby Driver. Not this!
