The Hollars are a slightly dysfunctional family. When Sally (Margo Martindale) is diagnosed with a brain tumor, the family gathers around, including son John (John Krasinski) who now lives in New York. He hasn't been around much lately and has a lot to catch up on - his former flame Gwen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is now married to his Mother's nurse (Charlie Day) and just had a baby, his brother Ron (Sharlto Copley) has been working for their Dad (Richard Jenkins) but just got fired, the business is falling apart and Ron has been spying on his ex-wife. On top of all that, John is expecting a baby with his girlfriend Rebecca (Anna Kendrick) in New York and is a little nervous about the looming responsibility. In the face of all the chaos, they must circle around Sally and rely on each other as she faces brain surgery.
This is a sweet, funny, sad, slightly predictable but engaging comedy directed by John Krasinski. I really enjoyed it. Everyone was very good. Margo Martindale was terrific. I laughed and cried and hoped for the best for all of the characters. You might know where the movie is headed and it isn't a deep film but it is worth going along for the ride. Go see it.
