Mark Wahlberg is Jim Bennett, a Columbia Literature professor with a gambling problem. Eventually, he is forced to borrow money from his Mother (Jessica Lange) and a loan shark. Along the way, he begins to fall for one of his students (Brie Larson). When all of the stakes are pitted against him and his life is on the line, all he can hope is that his final wager will give him a second chance.
This movie looked so promising. The acting is first rate. You wouldn't necessarily pick Mark Wahlberg to play a college professor, but he does a nice job. My issue with the whole movie is that it was just too plodding. Wahlberg's character didn't seem to care whether he lived or died, so I didn't really care. I prefer to be a little more invested in the characters. And, I just wasn't. I think this movie could have been better. It was just average.
