Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) is 16 years old and has terminal cancer. She is being treated aggressively and no one really knows how much time she has left. Her parents (played by Laura Dern and Sam Trammell) encourage her to go out into the world and make friends or at least attend the cancer support group at the local church. At first, she is not very interested in listening to everyone's cancer stories. Then she meets Augustus "Gus" Waters (Ansel Elgort), an 18 year old in remission, afraid only of oblivion. He is drawn to her. She tries to rebuff him because she feels that she is just a grenade waiting to explode and hurt everyone around her. He is not deterred and continues to pursue her. They bond over their shared interest in Hazel's favorite book (a book about cancer, no less). They obsess over the ending of this book and really want to know what happens after the book ends. Gus uses his last wish to take Hazel and her Mom to Amsterdam to meet the author (Willem Dafoe) and get the scoop direct from the writer's mouth. He is not at all what they expected, but the trip brings them closer together. As their love grows, we all know that their time together won't last forever.

This movie is based on the hugely popular novel of the same name by John Green. If you don't already know about this movie, then just remember to take kleenex because it is sad. But it is funny and heartwarming and romantic. It is so well acted that you forget you are watching two very young actors. They will both probably have very long acting careers. Don't be put off by the subject matter. The movie is just so touching and feels so real. Go see it!!
