Annie (Nicole Kidman) and Baxter (Jason Bateman) are the adult children of Caleb (Christopher Walken) and his wife, professional performance artists who used the kids in their public performances and managed to humiliate them more and more as they grew up. Now, the Fang parents have disappeared in what appears to be a car accident. Or have they? Annie thinks it is another performance piece. Baxter just wants to move on with his life. They both have lots of baggage that they need to get over. They decide to investigate for themselves as they try to overcome their past. They might still be in for a few surprises.

This movie is mostly a drama. The humor is pretty dark but I really liked it. There is a nice "aha" moment toward the end of the film. I didn't exactly see that coming. This is Jason Bateman's second film as director (his first was Bad Words - hilarious!!). He does a fine job. I enjoy him more when he is sarcastic and funny, but he did a nice job in a more serious role. Nicole was really good, too. This is an unusual and quirky film. More for the arthouse crowd, but very well-acted and a pretty decent story, too. Go see it.
