Minnie (Bel Powley) is a 15 year-old girl beginning to explore her sexuality. Behind her Mother's (Kristen Wiig) back, she begins an affair with Monroe (Alexander Skarsgård) her Mother's boyfriend. She thinks she feels like an adult and records all of her escapades into her tape recorder. After all, it is 1976 in San Francisco and peace, love and drugs are all in abundance. Minnie's mother has little time for her or her younger sister Gretel. Minnie is longing for love and attention and thinks sex is the answer. She runs wild, experiments and ends up back home probably wishing she could take back many of the things that she did. But, as she moves on to the next phase of her life, she saves her tapes because they are the diary of an American teenager.

This movie is playing to rave reviews and acclaim. The performances are terrific, particularly Kristen Wiig in a purely dramatic role. But, it really made me feel icky. It is all about a 15 year-old, including full nudity (even though I know the actress is much older) sleeping with a man in his 30's. And, no one really cares. Then, as if that isn't enough, she experiments with one-night-stands and women. And, takes copious amounts of drugs. Where is CPS? Today, this mom would be in jail but I guess in 1976, this was just free love. Even though I understand the hype, it is hard to recommend this movie. If you do go, just be prepared to feel uncomfortable.
