This is based on a true story. Einar (Eddie Redmayne) and Gerda (Alicia Vikander) Wegener are married artists living in Copenhagen in the 1920"s. When Gerda has Einar pose for a painting in a dress, this sets off Einar's quest to become Lili, a groundbreaking transgender pioneer.

I didn't really connect to this movie. I think Eddie and Alicia both did fantastic jobs and both may be in contention for Oscars (Eddie, especially). But, I never felt Einar's desire to become Lili. He is a happily married man and in the blink of an eye, decides that he wants to become a woman and undergoes the first full sex-reassignment surgery. The movie did very little to show his gender confusion so his desire to become a woman seemed unrealistic. And, when it became clear that the surgery could kill him, going forward with it at the risk of death did not really make sense. Apparently, the movie deviates from the real story. Einar's wife tried to stay with him but by the time he was having his second operation, she was remarried and lving in another country. Not quite as supportive as the moive portrays. Anyway, the performances are great and Oscar worthy. The film - not so much. See it for the performances but you may not really relate to the story overall.
