It is the early 1920's in Wichita, Kansas. Norma (Elizabeth McGovern) is in a conventional and slightly stifling marriage to Alan (Campbell Scott). She jumps at the chance to accompany a young starlet-in-the-making, Louise Brooks (Haley Lu Richardson) to New York City as her chaperone. This is a fascinating look at the relationship between the free-spirited Louise on the cusp of fame and her more reserved chaperone. As Louise pursues her dance career, Norma makes a discovery of her own. At the end of their trip, both women have learned new things about themselves and each other.

I really liked this film. I didn't realize that it was based on a true story. Louise Brooks went on to be a famous film star and eventually a writer. The entire cast is great in this movie. Haley Lu Richardson glows on the screen. And, it was nice to see Elizabeth McGovern in a film where she gets to shine. The supporting cast is great, too including Miranda Otto, Geza Rohrig and Blythe Danner in a small but important cameo. This movie was a nice afternoon surprise. Take your Mom or a girlfriend and go see it!
