It is 1912 London and women are still treated as second class citizens. They work longer hours at menial jobs and get paid less than men. They have little right to their own money or even their children and they cannot vote. A group of women have joined together as Suffragettes to fight the establishment and try to gain the right to vote. They follow the tutelage of Emmaline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep). They protest and nothing changes so Emmaline starts to encourage small incidents of violence to try to draw attention to their cause. Edith (Helena Bonham Carter) is educated but still treated as insignificant. She helps recruit women to the cause. Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan) is hesitant to join but as she sees what is happening around her, she is slowly drawn to the fight at a huge personal cost. It takes drastic acts (hunger strikes, protests and even a bombing) to finally wake up the men in power but it is still several years before women get the vote.

This is a decent film. It definitely opens your eyes to how things used to be and makes you apprectiate all of the rights women currently enjoy. The cast is fine and all give good performances. At the end, a chart of dates for when voting rights were granted in various countries is very eye-opening. Women MAY get the right to vote THIS YEAR in Saudi Arabia. Wow! Worth a look. Go see it.
