Apparently this was the top grossing film of 2013 in Russia. I can see why. This is the epic story of the Battle of Stalingrad, the bloodiest battle of World War II. It focuses on a group of Russian soldiers dug into a strategic building on the banks of the Volga river. The Germans have basically destroyed the city and the Russians can only hope to hold them back from advancing to the river. There are still a few civilians who have not left the city. Among others, the soldiers encounter 2 women in different situations which reflect the gritty realities of war. There is unlikely romance and definite heartbreak as the battle rages for 5 months. It ultimately becomes one of the most important victories for the Allied forces.
I really liked this movie. I had seen the preview but didn't know anything else about it before I went. It was in IMAX 3D and it was like you were actually there. You got to know the characters and feel what it was like in the heat of battle. I would definitely recommend this movie. Beware, it is subtitled.
