Jill's Review

Runs 117 minutes

Kevin (James McAvoy) kidnaps three teenage girls, Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), Claire (Haley Lu Richardson) and Marcia (Jessica Sula). He holds them in an underground bunker and warns them that he is holding them for the "Beast". Soon, the girls realize that Kevin has DID - Dissociative Identity Disorder. He has multiple personalities, 23 to be exact. Meanwhile, his Doctor, Dr. Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckley) realizes that something is going on and tries to counsel him to reveal what that might be. The girls try to figure out which personality might help them escape but only seem to anger him more. When it becomes apparent that the "Beast" might actually be a 24th personality, everything comes to a head. Will the girls find a way to escape before they must face the "Beast"?

This is directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It has its creepy moments and the requisite "twist" at the end. It even has a few elements of the supernatural. James McAvoy really sinks his teeth into this role and is phenomenal. He switches between personalities at the drop of a hat, assuming different accents, lisps and mannerisms. He is worth the price of the ticket. Otherwise, I thought the movie was average. Not nearly as good as Sixth Sense or even The Visit. It places the girls in peril but it is never that suspenseful. And, I didn't think the "twist" was all that great. Some people will be left scratching their heads and some may think it is the best thing ever. This isn't a bad movie. I just wanted it to be a little better. If you like M.Night Shyamalan, then you might want to see it.
