Man-made global warming is ruining the planet. Scientists have invented a chemical that will be sprayed into the atmosphere to reduce temperature levels and try to bring stability back to the planet's climate. OOOPS, it worked only now the planet is frozen solid and all living things are dead except the people aboard a perpetual-motion train that continuously circles the globe. It is now 2031 A.D. and the people have been on the train for 17 years. Some have never set foot on earth. The lower classes are kept in the back of the train and served gelatinous protein bars for nutrition. The upper classes live in the front of the train, Orient Express style, eating steak, taking saunas and dancing at the disco. The people in the back of the train, lead by Curtis (Chris Evans) and his sidekick Edgar (Jamie Bell) lead an uprising to get to the front of the train and take control of the engine. Whoever controls the engine controls the train. This is a dangerous journey and things aren't always what they seem along the way. Will the people's uprising succeed or will they be sent to live out the rest of their days crammed in the back of the train.
I gave this an extra half star just for pure creativity. It is directed by Bong Joon-Ho (The Host and Mother) and it is his first English language movie. Boy is it a wild ride. Some of the action sequences are amazing. Hurtling around on a train and fighting to get to the front was crazy exciting in this film. I really thought this was better than I expected. There was the obvious storyline of the "haves" versus the "have nots", but there was so much more. The backgroud story was slowly revealed and you really felt for these characters. Don't get too attached because there is a high body count! I say go see it!
