This is a documentary about the life of Seymour Bernstein, an accomplished musician and piano teacher. This follows Seymour as he walks us through his career as a performer and then the realization that the performance anxiety and commercialization of the business was robbing him of his love of playing. So, at age 50 he walks away and begins teaching lessons to promising students. He sets up his small apartment in Manhattan for lessons and we see him coaching various students in the joy of piano. He helps teach a Master piano class and still composes music. But his real joy comes from seeing his students grow and excel.

As directed by Ethan Hawke (Yes - that Ethan Hawke - who just happened to sit by Seymour at a dinner and was fascinated by him), this is a sweet little gem of a film. Obviously, there is plenty of beautiful music. But, there are life lessons, too. Seymour is just a fascinating man. He has such an interesting story. And, through the whole movie you can feel his love for music and his students. If you enjoy lovely music and watching a man happy and content with his life, who is trying to pass some of that on to the next generation, then this is for you. Go see it.
