John Gregory (Jeff Bridges) is a Spook, a seventh son of a seventh son, protecting his country from all manner of evil spirits. Since he is getting on up there in years, he has been trying to train an apprentice to take over for him. Most have failed to survive. As a younger man, John Gregory was able to capture Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), the most evil witch in the land, and put her in a dark dungeon where he thought she would remain for all eternity. However, when the blood moon appears in the sky, she becomes all powerful and is able to escape. She eliminates John Gregory's apprentice and that leads him to Tom Ward (Ben Barnes), one of the last in the line of seventh sons. Together they must try to destroy Mother Malkin before she destroys the entire land. Or will Tom be lured to the other side by the beautiful young witch Alice (Alicia Vikander)?

This movie was pretty decent. I thought Julianne Moore was fantastic as the evil witch. She seemed like she was having a good time playing the evil character for once. Jeff Bridges garbled his words which drove me crazy but apart from that, I thought he was pretty good. I didn't expect much from this film so I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too bad. The special effects and crazy evil creatures were very creative. I'm not sure that they will make the sequel but they left an opening in case it does well. I would say that it is worth the matinee price.
