George Pemberton (Bradley Cooper) is a lumber baron, among other things. In depression era North Carolina, he is struggling to maintain his empire while trying to expand to Brazil. When Serena (Jennifer Lawrence) enters the picture, he is immediately smitten. She has a tragic past, but also experience in the timber busines. She becomes his wife and full partner in the business. Of course this business involves political payoffs and other shenanigans. When a tragic health crisis befalls the couple, Serena begins to come unhinged. Will she be the cause of ruin for the Pemberton empire?
This movie looked really good on paper, with a top-notch cast. There is great chemistry between Bradley and Jennifer but it is slightly wasted in this average film. It is fairly plodding with lots of hunting and wood-chopping. There is a little excitement involving a hunting guide (Rhys Ifans) and an illegitimate child. But, then the ending is so ridiculous that you can't help but shake your head. If you are a HUGE fan of Bradley and Jennifer, then you might catch the matinee. Otherwise, just pass.
