Bill Murray is Richie Lanz, a down-on-his-luck talent agent. When one of his clients, Ronnie (Zooey Deschanel) is offered a chance to sing on a USO tour in Afghanistan, Richie jumps at the opportunity. Of course, the trip turns into a nightmare and Ronnie runs off at the first opportunity. Richie is left with no talent until he discovers a teenager named Salima (Leem Labany) singing in a cave. He convinces her to go with him to Kabul to perform on Afghan Star. With the help of Merci (Kate Hudson), a prostitute willing to help chaperone, they head to Kabul. Of course, this causes all kinds of conflict because Salima is the first female Muslim to perform on live TV. She is good, but will she make it to the final round alive?
The idea for this movie is loosely based around the real girl who risked a lot to perform on Afghan Star. The rest is just made up. There was some potential for this to be funny. Richie's first visit to Afghanistan is pretty humorous. And, the cast is great. The movie is just so average. It is fairly dull. The writing is just not that good. There are some funny moments but not enough. I say give this one a pass.
