Runs 140 minutes

It is 2045 and the world is not a happy place. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) lives with his Aunt in the stacks (basically the slums). His parents died when he was young and there does not appear to be much hope for his future. The only time he is truly happy is when he enters the OASIS, a virtual reality universe where he can be whoever or whatever he wants to be. The OASIS was created by a reclusive genius named James Halliday (Mark Rylance). Before he died, he created a puzzle of a video game that would award the winner his vast fortune and the keys to the OASIS. Since his death, Wade and his friends in the OASIS - including his love interest Samantha (Olivia Cooke) - have been competing to win the keys to the kingdom. But, Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) has other ideas. He runs the IOI corporation and has hundreds of employees trying to crack the code so he can control the OASIS. In a race against time, Wade and his friends must outsmart Sorrento and his hordes of professional gamers in the OASIS while also fighting off attacks in the real world. Can Wade and his friends save the OASIS before it falls into the wrong hands?

This movie is directed by Steven Spielberg. I was prepared to not like it since I am not a video game player and have no real interest in virtual reality. However, Spielberg has created a winner. This film is a fast-paced, adventure-filled wonder. The special effects are amazing. Flipping between the real world and the virtual world was pretty cool. There was still plenty of character development mixed in with the action. You were really pulling for Wade and his friends. And, it was pretty cool to see the real people once they shed their avatars in the real world. There are a few nice surprises behind those avatars. I think most people will like this film. It does have some real world violence and quite a bit of language but it isn't too over the top. Fine for most older kids. So, I would say this is one of the best films of 2018, so far. Go see it.
