This is based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga), a young, uneducated girl from the slums of Uganda who goes on to become a chess champion. Phiona has limited options. Her mother Nakku (Lupita Nyong'o) can't afford to send her to school so Phiona and her brother sell vegetables to raise money for the family. Soon, Phiona will be forced to find a man to support her like her sister has done. One day, Phiona and her brother stumble across a Christian mission. Along with hot porridge, Robert Kartende (David Oyelowo) is teaching the youngsters to play chess. Phiona is immediately intrigued. Against her mother's wishes, she spends more and more time developing her skills. Soon, Robert is entering her in tournaments and she is winning. There are bumps along the way, but soon Phiona beomes a chess master and the "Queen of Katwe".

This is a heart-warming true story. Perfect for the whole family, it is amazing to see how Phiona and her family lived in a place such as Uganda. They had nothing, barely a roof over their heads. But, they survived and Phiona thrived as she learned to play chess and expand her horizons. Such an uplifting film with a nice faith-based element. Without the Christian mission, none of this would have been possible. Inspiring and true. Such a great movie. Go see it and take the whole family.
