Jill's Review

Opens October 5, 2018 (in theatres and on Netflix)

Runs 123 minutes

Richard (Paul Giamatti) and Rachel (Kathryn Hahn) are desperate to have a baby. They have tried everything. They have been let down by fertility treatments and prospective adoption agencies. They are about to give up hope. When the doctor suggests a third party egg donor, they really don't feel that is a viable option. That is until their college dropout niece comes to live with them and offers to donate her eggs. Suddenly, a new lifeline opens up to them. Is Sadie (Kayli Carter) the answer to their prayers, afterall?

This is a very good movie. It is intimate and personal. The very first scene is Richard injecting his wife with hormones. This is not a process that you want to go through alone. But, the movie doesn't flinch away from the emotional toll that this puts on a marriage. The entire cast is great including, Molly Shannon, John Carroll Lynch and Denis O'Hare. Paul Giamatti is perfect. He is kind of a funny/sad and bitter but nice guy and he fits his role perfectly. And, Kathryn Hahn is great in a dramatic role. I enjoyed this film. There is some subtle humor (and a little "let's make a baby" humor). However, this is a drama about a serious subject. Luckily, it ends on a hopeful note. I really enjoyed it. Unless you are actually going through fertility treatments, then I think it is worth seeing. So, go see it.
