Jill's Review

Opens July 24, 2015]

Runs 105 minutes

In 1982, Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler) and Eddie "the Fireblaster" Plant  (Peter Dinklage) faced off for the first video game championship. A time capsule of the competition was created and blasted into space. Little did they know that it was taken as a challenge and now the world is under attack by creatures based off of those same video games. The President, Will Cooper (Kevin James) is forced to call on his best friend Sam to help save the world with the help of Ludlow Lamonsoff (Josh Gad) and Lt. Colonel Violet Van Patten (Michelle Monaghan). When it appears that they need all of the help they can get, they even agree to spring the Fireblaster from prison. Together, they must create the weapons necessary to fight off these space invaders in the guise of Pac Man, Donkey Kong and Centipede. Will they be able to remember the skills that they had all of those years ago playing video games in the arcades? Will the world be saved?

Ok, I went into this movie planning to grin and bear it. I was very skeptical. I was pleasantly surprised. It is not a great movie, but it is entertaining and fine for the whole family. It was especially humorous to me as I grew up with all of those video games. I was not a gamer and I have never played any of those games but that didn't matter. The music and the humor constantly brought back high school memories. I thought it was funny with plenty of action and enough adult humor to keep me engaged. And, it appeared that even the kids who probably never played an arcade game before had a good time. They cheered and were all talking and laughing about the movie on the way out. So, I would say take the kids and go for a few laughs. Not bad.
