Jill's Review

Opens January 12, 2018 (limited in 2017)

Runs 130 minutes

Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day Lewis) is a renowned dressmaker for the rich and famous. He lives a very structured life, with his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) handling his day-to-day matters. Models and other women are readily available to him and they come and go, with Cyril sometimes handling the messy breakups. Any romance drama is to be avoided at all costs. Then Reynolds meets Alma (Vicky Krieps). She is no pushover and soon becomes his model and muse. But, when she feels his attention waning, she takes things into her own hands. Soon, he finds his well-controlled and organized life taking a turn. Is he capable of falling in love after all?

This is reportedly Daniel Day Lewis's final film before he retires. I was really looking forward to it. The Husband and I were sadly disappointed. It is so boring. The acting is world-class and the costuming is fantastic. But, nothing much happens. It was a relief when Reynolds and Alma had a nasty fight. At least it breathed some life into the film. The critics are loving this movie. And, for the acting alone, I can understand that. But, for the average movie-goer, this film is glacially slow moving. The preview made it seem much more entertaining and lively, with maybe a little more going on. Not so much. If you love Daniel Day Lewis, then you might see this anyway just to appreciate his acting. Otherwise, you might just skip this one unless you are seriously in need of a nap.
