Patti (Danielle Macdonald) has dreams of being a rapper. The only problem is that she is a plus-size white girl living with her mother in Bayonne, New Jersey. She and her best friend Jerry (Siddharth Dhananjay) get together and write lyrics and practice their performances. But, there is nobody to hear them. Patti's mother Barb (Bridget Everett) once had musical dreams of her own and doesn't see any talent in her daughter. Only Patti's Nana (Cathy Moriarty) tells her to go for her dreams. When Jerry and Patti meet Bastard (Mamoudou Athie), they find another lost soul trying to find his way in the music world. Together, they make a demo tape. Can Patti overcome her background, being mis-judged and called Dumbo and finally give that breakout performance that might get her out of New Jersey once and for all?

This is a great film. The Husband and I both loved it. It is sweet and touching, loud and profane. The music/rap will actually have you nodding along. Danielle Macdonald gives a breakout performance as Patti Cake$. Who knew she was Australian? She is so good. The language is very rough. Do not take the kids. But, the performances are so good. Cathy Moriarty as the grandmother is a hoot (but also so sad, stuck being taken care of by her granddaughter). Bridget Everett, as Patti's mom is amazing. Their relationshp is so complicated. Barb's dreams have been crushed by the realaity of life and she has a hard time even supporting her daughter. You can just feel the love/jealousy/envy between the two. This is a movie about a white girl trying to rap but it is also about families and relationships. Even if you don't like rap, you will like this movie. It will make you laugh and move you to tears. Go see it!
