This is the story of a young basketball phenom from Germany, who worked his way to the NBA and eventually led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Championship. The movie starts in Germany when Dirk was just another kid playing basketball. When Holger Geschwindner began to recognize his talent, he became Dirk's personal coach and mentor and eventually helped him get to the NBA. This movie tells Dirk's story through interviews with his parents, his sister, one of his childhood friends and Holger. And these are still the people that are closest to Dirk, along with his wife and a lovely woman in the Maverick's front office who helped him when he had no idea how to pay a bill or do anything else for himself. Dirk is hugely talented but also humble and loyal and that comes across clearly in this movie about one of the best players in the NBA today.

I have to confess, I am a Dallas Maverick season ticketholder and a huge Dirk fan so I am biased. However, I really loved this intimate look at where Dirk came from and what it was like for him to come to America and work his way to his ultimate goal - an NBA Championship. This film was made by German filmmakers, so a lot of it is in German. There are subtitles. But, it is so fun to watch Dirk grow up on screen that you forget that you are reading. This is not a perfect movie. It jumps around and it would have been nice to see a little more of his current family life, but overall it is thoroughly enjoyable. If you are a sports fan, then you will want to see this. If you are a Dirk fan, then you HAVE to see this.
