Jill's Review

Opens June 6, 2014 in Dallas

Runs 112 minutes

Three radical environmentalists, Dena, Josh and Harmon (Dakota Fanning, Jesse Eisenberg and Peter Sarsgaard) plot to blow up a dam in Oregon as a statement against those they feel are ruining the land. They meet up and very deliberately go about carrying out their scheme. Only things don't go exactly as they had planned. In the aftermath, Josh becomes concerned that his cohorts may not be able to handle the pressure of what they did.

This movie is very slow and deliberate. In the first half as the three prepare for the big event, the movie builds suspense gradually. It starts off promisingly but there is not much dialogue. It is never really revealed what each person's motivation is behind their actions. Yes, they are environmentalists and they want to protect the land, but how will blowing up this dam really make a difference? In the second half, things fell apart a little for me. The pacing was just too slow in the second half. And the ending leaves you scratching your head. That is not how I would have ended the movie. The acting is fine and the scenery is terrific. However, this is probably one you could wait for the DVD.
