Jacob (Asa Butterfield) dotes on his grandfather Abe (Terence Stamp). As a young boy, his grandfather told him tales of the children's home where he was raised and of his mysterious friends like the invisible boy, the floating girl and the boy filled with bees. Jacob loved hearing of Abe's adventures but as he grew older, he grew more skeptical of Abe's tall tales. Then, one night when Jacob finds his grandfather near dead in the garden and thinks he sees a "monster" in the distance, he starts to remember the stories and question his own sanity. Soon, he convinces his father to take him to Wales to visit this children's home and satisfy his curiosity once and for all. Only, once there, he enters "the loop" and finds the home as it was in 1934 with all of the people just as his grandfather described. Unfortunately, he was followed by an evil villian Barron (Samuel L. Jackson) who needs to eat the eyes of these special children to maintain his humanity. Together with Jacob (who finally discovers his own peculiarity), the children learn to fight back against evil and try to survive to see another day.

This was an interesting movie. I thought the characters were fascinating and I thought everyone did a nice job. There were some great actors in this film with Terence Stamp, Judy Dench and Samuel L. Jackson. The problem is the concept behind "the loop". (These peculiars are forced to live in a time warp where they live through the day, then reset the clock and start all over and do it again. They don't age unless they get locked outside the loop, then they will grow old and die) This gets pretty complicated. It is hard to just enjoy the film because you are constantly trying to keep track of how the loop works. Anyway, that detracted from the enjoyment for me. It is based on a book series for young adults and there are lots of kids in this film but it is dark and scary. It is not meant for younger kids. This is not a bad film at all. It just wasn't quite as good as I had hoped. Go see it and judge for yourself.
