Xuan (Chao Deng) is a rich industrialist. He has just purchased a large parcel of land and sea with the intent to reclain the sea and build on the newly created land. The only problem is that this will kill all of the sea life. He cannot reclaim the sea if there is viable marine life. So, he has his scientists develop a sonar technology which drives the marine life out of the area. Unfortunately, the mermaids need this area to survive. They send Shan (Yun Lin), a beautiful young mermaid to seduce Xuan and then kill him, all the while hiding the fact that she is a mermaid. But, soon the two fall in love and everything changes.

This is Stephen Chow's new film. It is zany and funny, although it does take a dark and violent turn in the final act. It has grossed over $500 million dollars in China. It is a typical Chinese film. There is a lot of mugging for the camera and slap-sticky acting. But, the story is original and the cast is very attractive. There are a few gruesome scenes involving an octopus mer-man and some other mermaids who are in peril. Overall, entertaining. A little silly. Skip the 3D - not worth it. If you like foreign films and are into fantasies, this might be for you.
