This is based on a true story. Megan (Kate Mara) is going nowhere in her small town. Out of options, she joins the Marines. During training, she is drawn to the canines who are trained to help detect IEDs on the battlefield. Soon, she is assigned the most combative dog named Rex. It doesn't take long before they have forged a deep bond. They are sent into battle (and this was before women actually went to the front lines, but she and her dog were needed). Megan and Rex were responsible for saving many lives. But, tragedy strikes when they are hit by an IED. Megan slowly recovers and decides to leave the military. She assumes Rex, who also suffers from PTSD, will be retired and she can adopt him. Not so simple. He is a soldier not a pet and he is sent back into battle. Megan fights for years to adopt Rex and is eventually successful. In fact, she helped change the rules to make it easier for soldiers to adopt their dogs after the war.

This is a movie about war, courage, bravery and the love of a dog. It hits right to the heart. I had to make sure that the dog survived before I could even go. Sorry for the spoiler. Kate did a great job and really bonded with the actor dog Rex. I think it would be terrifying to be the first people sent down a road or into a building sniffing for bombs. She and her dog were true heroes. Loved the movie. Go see it.
