Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) has just returned from France having been widowed at the age of 18. Rather than marry, she decides to return to Scotland and reclaim her throne. Meanwhile, England is under the rule of Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie). The women strike up a friendship via letters. However, these two women are rivals. And, the men in their courts will stop at nothing to reduce the women's power. Soon, they must each decide whether to marry and produce an heir or remain independent. Mary, tired of being treated as just a figurehead makes a move to claim the English throne. Palace intrigue, rebellion and betrayal imperil both thrones and ultimately, there can only be one Queen.

This is a pretty entertaining movie. The Husband and I both really enjoyed it. Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie both give outstanding performances. It takes a little while at the beginning to figure out who everyone is and what they are up to, but once the story gets rolling, it all comes together. Man, women had it rough in the 1500's. There was constant pressure to marry and produce an heir but mostly so the men could then take over and claim the throne. Lots of palace intrigue. I kind of knew this story but this movie shows how tough it must have been for these women to rule in a time dominated by men. Loved the story, the costumes and the acting. Go see it.
