Jill's Review

Opens February 27, 2015

Runs 111 minutes

This movie follows a typical (Ha!) Hollywood family as they try to attain and maintain fame. Stafford Weiss (John Cusack) is a life coach, earning his fortune with self-help manuals. Christina Weiss (Olivia Williams) mostly handles the career of their son Benjie Weiss (Evan Bird), a child star who was in rehab by age 9 and is now recovering at age 13. Then there is the daughter that no one talks about, Agatha (Mia Wasikowska). She has just been released from a sanitorium. She has a slight pyromania problem. Havana (Julianne Moore) is an actress and a client, who is just a little too stressed out and really wants a certain movie part. Together these people are all headed toward disaster.

This is directed by David Cronenberg. He has always made strange movies. He is very obsessed with siblings, twins, families. This movie is no different except it is no good. Usually, his movies are strange but good. Not this one. Even Julianne Moore can't save this one because this movie is beneath her. Nothing redeeming happens. None of the characters are likeable. In fact, they are mostly reprehensible. So, skip this one and save yourself from having to take a shower when it is over.
