Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is forced to return home to care for his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges) upon the sudden death of his brother Joe (Kyle Chandler). Slowly, Lee must face the demons of his past as he tries to settle his brother's estate and figure out how to care for Patrick. Lee's past is revealed slowly through flashbacks, contrasting his happy life in the past with his current feelings of anger and despair. Being back in is hometown only magnifies his feelings of unhappiness and loss. How can he possibly be a parent to Patrick when he is barely able to care for himself?

I loved this movie. It is deeply sad and heartfelt. But, it is also warm and funny. It reflects the feelings of love, family, friendship, sadness and loss. Casey Affleck was terrific. In flashbacks he was happy and fun-loving. Obviously in love with his wife and kids. In the present, he is sad and burdened. He depicts the full gamet of emotions and does a fabulous job. He will definitely be a contender come award season. Lucas Hedges was a find as Patrick. He was just great - funny and sardonic with a quick wit. I loved him. The entire cast was just great. Michelle Williams only had a small part but she was perfect. I can't say enough about this film. The Husband really liked it but he thought it was a little too sad. It is, but it is just so good. Terrific script, terrific acting and an overall terrific movie. Go see it.
