Joe Albany (John Hawkes) is a talented pianist with an on and off addiction to heroin. Amy (Elle Fanning) is Joe's daughter and she worships him, which is why his spirals into drug addiction and  prison hurt even more. This is her story as she both loves and hates her father as he tries to make it during the 70's jazz scene.

John Hawkes and Elle Fanning are both fantastic. Glenn Close shows up as Joe's mother and sometime caregiver for Amy. She is also good. So, I think the performances were better than the movie taken as a whole. It is a true story so there was no attempt to make it more positive. It is pretty unpleasant. The music is good and it is an interesting look at a few years in the life of a tortured artist. Worth a matinee but don't expect to leave smiling.
