This film is based on the true story of Walter (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred (Ruth Negga) Loving, an interracial couple sent to prison in 1958 when they married and tried to live as husband and wife in Virginia. Walter and Mildred grew up together and their families were close. Walter and Ruth's brother loved drag racing and Walter's Mom was the local midwife. When Ruth becomes pregnant, Walter takes the next step and proposes marriage. They travel to Washington D.C. where it is legal for them to marry and then return home to Virginia to live an unassuming life. The local authorities aren't too keen on their marriage and arrest them. Even though all they want is to just live a quiet life, they spend the next decade fighting for the right to live as a married couple in Virginia, finally taking their case all the way to the Supreme Court.

This is a solid movie based on a real couple - the Lovings. The movie is slow-paced, intimate and deliberate. There are a few scenes where you feel as if something bad could happen to this couple but mostly, it is just a straightforward story. This couple just wanted to be left alone to live their lives together with their children. They never wanted to be the poster couple for interracial marriage. They just loved each other. This is a sweet and heartfelt film. The acting is fantastic. Ruth Negga is a true find. She can act with just a glance. Joel Edgerton does a fine job, too. HIghly recommend this film. Loved the historical importance but also just the beautiful love story. Go see it.
