Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale) is a recent widow and must now rely on friends and relatives for her livelihood. She has also had a dalliance or two with a married man. Whatever it takes as a single woman in the 1790's. She realizes that she must soon find a husband for herself and her daughter Frederica (Morfydd Clark) in order to maintain her position in polite society. Even her best friend Alicia (Chloe Sevigny) has been warned by her husband to avoid Lady Susan due to her questionable reputation. Lady Susan decides to head to the country estate of her in-laws in order to avoid some of the gossip surrounding her and to put her plan in place to secure a husband. Using all of her feminine wiles, she soon has several suitable suitors. Now, which one will she choose for her daughter and which one for herself?

This is based on a novella by Jane Austen and it is one of her best stories. It is witty and entertaining. The cast is excellent, particularly Kate Beckinsale. She is so quick-witted and amusing. You really need to stay alert so as not to miss any comment she might make. This is a pleasant diversion from the other loud and chaotic summer movies. Perfect date movie. I loved this film and I had a fun time. It was beautifully filmed and had such clever dialogue. And, it was all done with a PG rating! Highly recommend this film. Go see it.
