Julieta (Emma Suarez) is a middle-aged woman living in Madrid with her longtime boyfriend Lorenzo (Dario Grandinetti). They are preparing for a move to Portugal. When Julieta runs into Bea (Michelle Jenner) the former best friend of her daughter Antia, everything changes for Julieta. She finds out that her daughter is living in Switzerland and has 3 children. Since Julieta has been estranged from her daughter for over a decade, old feelings of grief and loss begin to surface. She decides not to move to Portugal, she breaks up with Lorenzo and moves back to the apartment building where she raised Antia, hoping to get at least a letter from her. With flashbacks to her earlier life and past tragedies, she is forced to confront her memories and the pain of loss and separation.
This is a Pedro Almodovar film. I guess I expected a little more quirk and eccentricity. It is a fairly straightforward story of love and loss and tragedy. It slowly unfolds, using flashbacks until the ultimate tragedy is fully revealed. It isn't a bad film. It is just slow and thoughtful. I felt that it was a little cold. I didn't really feel much emotion, I was just an observer. Not his best film, nor his worst. For big fans of Almodovar, you will want to see this. Otherwise, I would probably skip it.
