This is the story of the evolution of the Joker. The Joker starts out as an ordinary but somewhat unhappy man named Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix). Arthur has a tough life. He still lives with his mother Penny (Frances Conroy) and has no real friends. He sees government subsidized therapists and takes multiple medications, but no one really cares about him. Soon, his therapy is discontinued because of lack of funding and he is fired from his job. He wants to become a stand-up comic and thinks he is on the right track when late night host Murray Franklin (Robert DeNiro) invites him on the show. However, Arthur is treated as just a joke. Well, Arthur becomes the Joker and the joke is now unleashed on Gotham.

This movie is very dark. It is hard to watch. Joaquin Phoenix is the lone bright spot in the film. He is amazing and just becomes the Joker. I'm sure he will be nominated for many trophies during Awards season. However, it is hard to like this film. I only gave it 4 stars because Joaquin is so good. The rest of the movie left me unhappy and a little disturbed. Some theatres are refusing to show the film and other have warnings and bag searches. I don't see the positives in a film that drives that much unease and discomfort. But, Joaquin is fantastic. So, if you are a movie buff or a huge Comic book movie fan, then you should probably see this just for Joaquin's performance. Otherwise, you might want to skip it and see something a little more entertaining.
