Jill's Review

Opens July 31, 2015

Runs 96 minutes

Woody Allen's new film focuses on a college philosophy professor, Abe (Joaquin Phoenix) who finds no joy in life. He has just started teaching a summer session when he meets Jill (Emma Stone), an admiring student. He enjoys her company but still drinks way too much to cover up the pain of his meaningless existence. He also attempts meaningless sex with a fellow professor, Rita (Parker Posey) but he is so depressed that he can't perform. Until he plots to commit the perfect crime, which immediately gives him the shot of energy that seems to have been missing in his life. He is happy, he can have sex and he feels that his life has meaning. But, will that all disappear when his student/lover Jill starts to suspect that something is amiss?

This is a pretty good film. It is slow to develop but entertaining along the way. Joaquin Phoenix is pretty entertaining as he slowly comes out of his lethargic shell. I guess crime gets your juices flowing! Emma Stone is gorgeous and spunky, as usual. She keeps the viewer invested. The Husband and Trainer Joe both enjoyed the film. It is slowly paced and it feels slow, but the payoff is worth it. Not Woody Allen's best, but good enough. If you are a fan, go see it.
